A REPORT ON WORLD SICKLE CELL DAY CELEBRATION IN BAMENDA ON THE 19TH JUNE 2021 BY JAM EMILE
"The activities were carried out at the Bamenda Food market, beginning from 8:30 AM with assembly of 13 volunteers from EMELI’S SMILE SICKLE CELL FOUNDATION including two ambassadors of the foundation, Bacha Blanche (Small Pepper) and Valentine (ZEEVAL) at the front premises of Rural Finance Credit where a stand was mounted comprising of two tables, musical sets, flyers, water packs, chairs, bucket and packages of sweets (Small Pepper’s sweet treats).
Volunteers made up of doctors, nurses, warriors, and people from other domains were uniquely dressed in red with badges and walked throughout the food market area in groups of three distributing education manuals, giving out talks related to the theme; BREAK THE SICKLE CYCLE and also responding to question related to sickle cell disease.
A bucket was placed in front of the stand for free will donations with great musical entertainment and dance by some of the volunteers, meanwhile massive sales of Small Pepper’s sweet treats were ongoing from which 10% of each package purchased is donated to EMELI’S SMILE SICKLE CELL FOUNDATION. The activities continued until 5:30PM when the volunteers gathered at the stand and had a brief evaluation of the day, appreciated the food market population for their great support to the foundation, appreciated some volunteers with exceptional performance at the field and closing remark of the day from Small Pepper meanwhile fundraising campaign continues online".
Emeli’s Smile Sickle Cell Foundation has carried out several outreach events especially the FEED A WARRIOR TODAY Project which commenced June 2020 and the response has been amazing.
Break the Sickle Cycle is another form of outreach by the foundation and this time around we decided to reach out to the population in the public space. I must say the population of Bamenda was very receiving and welcoming and they appreciate the awareness created by the foundation so far.
We are still receiving donations. Please visit our website www.emelissmile.com and kindly donate. Every little helps.
